If you are going to be moving to London for a few years and you have pets that you would like to bring with you, then you will have to get organised well in advance of your move. The process is not complicated, but there are a number of regulations governing the movement of pets into the United Kingdom. We can help you with the process and ensure that you find a London property, ideal for your pets, in a neighborhood that suits your lifestyle.

Property Sizes And Pets After Moving To London

If you are bringing a pet with you and moving to a London rental apartment or home, then you will have to find out if the property that you are living in allows pets and whether or not there are adequate areas in the neighbourhood to exercise your pet. If you are bringing a larger animal such as a horse, into the country then you will have to find a property that is close to stables and exercise facilities. England is a horse lover’s paradise though, and even in London, there are a number of parks that have excellent facilities for riders and stabling for horses.

Pet Passport For Moving To London

There is a pet passport that you have to have before your pet will be allowed into the country. The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) allows for the free movement of pet dogs, cats and ferrets into the United Kingdom from Europe without having to have your animal quarantined. Since 2002, this has been extended to 50 other countries around the world, including the USA and Canada. All pets, including horses must have certain documents before moving to London.

1. A Pet Passport from your vet.

2. Blood test results to ensure that the vaccine for rabies has reached the required level of protection.

Be advised that as soon as you have made the decision that you will be moving to London you need to get your pets vaccinated, as they will only be issued with a Pet passport six months after receiving the rabies vaccine. All your pets must be micro chipped for identification purposes and be vaccinated with all of the required age related vaccines. All pets must have been treated for ticks and tapeworms not less than 24 hours before travelling.

Quarantine Of Pets When Moving To London

If your pets do not fulfil the requirements then they will have to be quarantined in kennels in London for up to six months after arrival. You will be able to visit them, but they will not be allowed home with you until they have passed all of the stringent requirements for pets in the United Kingdom. If you have certain breeds of dogs, you must make sure that they are allowed into the UK; Pit Bull Terriers, for example, are not allowed into England, under the Dangerous Dog Act.

Moving from US to London with Pets

london-relocation-petsExporting your pet out of the United States almost always requires an international health certificate which must be filled out by an APHIS approved veterinarian. If you’re lucky, your vet may be APHIS accredited and this will save you a lot of time and energy. The condition of your pet will be accessed and tests will be run to check that your pet isn’t sick, medical records will be certified by the APHIS authorized vet and these will have to be approved by your local Veterinary Services area office otherwise they are considered invalid. Getting a pet passport from USA to UK will not be possible unless you have fulfilled all of the rigorous criteria.

A USDA certified veterinarian will then supply an official PETS certificate after reviewing the required documents and your pet will need to be treated for ticks and tapeworms shortly before travelling. Dogs and cats are required to have blood tests a minimum of six months prior re-entry and treated for parasites.

Export rules and regulations change frequently and you should be able to get the most updated information from an embassy or consulate. Travel agents, brokers and exporters may not always have the most up-to-date information.

With the inclusion of dogs and cats from Canada and the US, the PETS scheme has enabled pets from these countries to enter certain parts of Europe and the United Kingdom without having to go through a lengthy quarantine period. Before the PETS scheme, pets entering the UK were required to go through the six month quarantine period.

Making Travel Arrangements for Pets Moving to London

As long as you have organized your pet passport to the UK all you need to do is make sure that the travel arrangements for your pets are safe, healthy and comfortable.

Getting your pet used to the travel crate is very important before you leave. After you have given sufficient time to your pet to get used to the travel crate at home, it’s time to prepare the pet travel crate for the day of the flight. It is crucial for you to prepare the crate correctly.

Ten Tips for Air Travel with Pets

1. Have all the labels ready and correctly printed. These should have been provided to you by the company or store from whom you bought the travel crate.

2. Put the sticker which says “Live Animal” on the three sides of the crate with the arrow pointing up. The stickers will typically be of a bright color such as orange.

3. Stick the sticker with all the pertinent details of your pet along with the airway bill number and the routing information. It should have the name and contact number of the consignee. This label should go on top of the crate.

4. Put a sticker with the name of your pet in the front above the grill/door.

6. Put a bowl of water inside the crate and securely attach it.

7. Attach a funnel outside the grill/door to enable the airline staff to replenish water in the bowl inside.

8. Put some type of absorbent material at the bottom of the crate. You can use foam, old blankets or even newspaper to do so. Avoid using litter as this is not allowed by most airlines.

9. Secure the crate with plastic zip ties on each side. Attach a zip tie to the crate grill/door.

10.  In case your pet requires medication during the flight, put the medication in a clear plastic bag and mark it properly with the name of the medication and the time at which it has to be given to your pet.
