No better way to celebrate your move that to indulge in one a time-honored London Tradition: Afternoon tea!

London is an international city, a melting pot like Paris and New York. So no matter where you’re relocating from there is bound to be some place in London that will remind you of the home you left behind. That said, London is not cultureless and we hope that you will embrace the English charms of your new city.

We delight in this London tradition and we hope you will too!

What’s great about afternoon tea is almost every Londoner loves it. It’s a great way to break up your day, akin to a Spanish siesta. If you’re moving to London for a new high profile job, or some serious studying, this afternoon treat is probably both well-needed and well-deserved. London, and indeed England’s, love of tea is evident because, as you will come to know, there are a myriad of beautiful places that host high teas. There’s a place for every taste and desire. From casual to proper, and from inventive to flamboyant, London has it all. Because there are so many places to experience this tradition, we made you a list of three of the places we think you should visit first, cheers first-tea-timers!

1. Modern Pantry

This afternoon tea is decently priced and served in a casual setting. From one to ten on the innovative scale, we give it a seven! At Modern Pantry, you have the choice of between a glass of white peach, lychee or passionfruit Bellini and a glass of Mabis Prosecco. Their seasonal tea library selection is small, but that’s because Modern Pantry has chosen quality over quantity. We absolutely LOVE their coconut & cardamom scone with gooseberry vanilla jam and clotted cream. If you haven’t tried clotted cream, be prepared to have every one of your dreams come true. If this place suits your fancy, be sure to check out their full menu so that you can fully anticipate the afternoon. Be sure to call ahead, their afternoon tea is by reservation only! The tea runs from three to five pm, Friday to Sunday, and Bank Holidays.

2. Aqua Shard – A Modern London Tradition

This is “highest” tea we are mentioning on this list. Aqua Shard isn’t cheap for a good reason! It’s absolutely perfect. This is a pure, classic place to try this British staple, less inventive then the first tea on our list. This place is barebones British from the drinks to the finger sandwiches. The atmosphere is especially beautiful because from every table you have a gorgeous view of the city; the menu is unsurpassable in British decadence, and the tea selection unparalleled. Afternoon tea at Aqua Shard is served Monday through Friday three to five. This is the place to go if you are looking for your tea-experience to be truly exquisite (and expensive!). Check out the menu, here.

3. Great Gatsby Tea at the Betty Blythe Vintage Tearoom

This place is unbeatably charming! This place is kitschy; with the 1920s themed flapper paraphernalia, but in our opinion the kitsch makes it cute, not passé. We love this place because it’s a twist on the British classic, but still true to afternoon tea in taste and delivery: at Betty Blythe’s you’ll never feel rushed to leave. They serve afternoon tea Monday through Friday at 12, 2, and 4 and on weekend at 11, 1:30 and 4. This intimate, casual, and fun space is the perfect place to go experience you first tea if you’re looking for a space that is more relaxed and less expensive! There are four different menus all of which can be found on the Betty Blythe website. If you do end up going, don’t act too cool to try on their flapper accessories and to take some photos with their backdrops, you’ll want to remember your first High Tea!
