Relocation to London involves many different issues and can be especially challenging if you have children. It is however one of the best decisions that you can ever make. Raising children in a foreign country for a few years will give them opportunities that they would never have back home. Children are such an important part of our lives.  It is therefore only natural that we would want to give them the best life possible and the opportunity to develop their potential from as young an age as possible.  In making the life-changing decision in relocation to London, one thing you can be certain of is that there is something in it for everyone.

Something For The Future Workforce

In the UK, you can apply for a Child Benefit; this is a tax-free payment for your child, generally paid monthly, but sometimes weekly.  There are two amounts; the higher of the two is paid for your eldest (or only) child. This payment can be claimed by anyone, regardless of their income.  To qualify for a Child Benefit, you need to reside in the UK together with the child, have the right to reside in the UK and be responsible for the upbringing of the child who resides with you, whether or not you are the child’s parent.

You will also be able to qualify for a Child Benefit if your child does not reside with you, provided that you pay (at least equivalent to the amount of this benefit) towards their upbringing and that the individual with whom your child resides is not claiming this benefit.

Child Benefit payments generally cease when your child reaches the age of 16, unless they are in education/training that counts for Child Benefit (excluding an advanced course at higher education level, e.g. a degree) and if they are under 18 and have recently left education/training.  Once your child reaches 20 years, you can no longer claim a Child Benefit.

This is just one in a series of benefits that you will be entitled to from the government while you are living in London. Learning about tax, benefits, and your rights and responsibilities as a resident of England, will go a long way towards making your relocation UK a successful one.
