Depending on where in the US you are moving from what to expect in flats will be a shock or just old knowledge.  For most of the residents of the States moving is a big culture shock with their new home being the biggest shock of all. The flats are little.  No matter whether you are searching for a one bedroom, two bedroom or even a three bedroom flat it will be smaller than what you would probably find anywhere in the States.

What to Expect – Size

This is perhaps one of the biggest challenges to overcome when searching flats for the average American family.  A recent report in the UK found that the size of the average one bedroom flat is 575 sq. ft.  Two bedroom flats measure up to an average size of 800 sq. ft.  This is quite a difference from American apartments where a two bedroom apartment is usually over 1,000 sq. ft.

What to Expect – Cost

Even more shocking than the size of flats is the cost.  First of all the cost of flats depends entirely on the location.  A flat in Chelsea will cost quite a bit more than a flat south of the Thames.  Location is everything.  The closer flats are to the center of London the higher the prices go as well.  On average though American expats can expect their new flats to run £1000 a month and up for a one bedroom.

What to Expect – Closets

Most flats are very old and as a result do not have closets – at all.  Americans are used to not only closets but huge, walk-in closets, laundry closets and pantry closets.  When moving to families must take the lack of closet space into account and plan accordingly.  On the good size, locals have become quite adept at storage without closets.

Moving is a cultural change for every American no matter from where they move to.  Even if you are used to living in a small apartment things will be different still in London flats.  Learning as much as possible about these differences and what to expect in flats before the move will eliminate a lot of stress after the move.
